$189 USD - November 2nd, 10:30 AM — A full-day journey through three unique cemeteries, with unforgettable lunch and dinner stops in charming rural towns outside Mexico City
A Very Special Experience
Every November in Mexico City and around the country, people decorate their local cemeteries and prepare their relatives graves for the arrival of their beloved ones coming to celebrate from the eternal world. They arrange their tombstones with flowers, food, and incense in order to welcome them and enjoy their visit.
We are happy to offer the only comprehensive and special day tour available in Mexico City for the Milpa Alta – Mixquic area. We will visit a few rural towns on the outskirts of Mexico City to see how the locals enjoy and experience this traditional day around the town. We will experience an authentic generational celebration that has been taken since pre-hispanic times.
Our day

Itinerary
1
Pickup & Departure
Our meeting point will be at Parque México, where your guide Gabriel and the van will be ready to welcome you. We’ll take a moment to get introduced, and Gabriel will give you a brief overview of the day ahead. Then, enjoying the calm of the morning, we’ll head south toward the rural landscapes of Xochimilco and Milpa Alta.
4
Mixquic
This cemetery is located in a town where the celebration grows bigger year after year. The village hosts live events, vendors fill the streets, and if you stay late enough, you'll experience the bustling crowds and lively chaos that take over the area. We'll arrive just as night falls, allowing us to enter the cemetery before it becomes crowded, where you'll witness locals vigilantly adorning tombs with light and flowers.
2
San Pedro
Our first stop marks the beginning of our journey, where we’ll witness the quiet rhythms of local life as families arrive at the tombs of their loved ones, bringing flowers and cleaning supplies to start the day. We’ll enjoy breakfast at a beloved traditional spot, cherished by the local community.
3
San Antonio
After lunch, we’ll continue our journey through fields of milpas, nopal cacti, and amaranth as we make our way to San Antonio — a vibrant town home to a larger, dynamic cemetery. Here, we’ll explore its deeply moving children’s section and witness the renowned creative tomb contest, a heartfelt tradition that brings families together each year in remembrance and celebration. Through color, symbolism, and imagination, we’ll see how communities give meaning to loss and memory. This stop offers a powerful glimpse into the Mexican Day of the Dead — where the cemetery comes alive with music, street markets, laughter, and reverence, just before the night’s rituals begin.
5
Dinner and return
After spending time in Mixquic, we’ll make our way to San Pedro for dinner. There, we’ll visit the town’s original small cemetery, where the peaceful ambiance and gentle glow of candles offer a quiet, intimate contrast to the vibrant celebrations we've experienced throughout the day. Afterwards, we’ll return to the city and drop you off at the same meeting point where the tour began.

I've been in Mexico City several times and I always said I would come back for Dia De Muertos! And it was even better than I expected. A day complete with three very different and interesting aspects of Day of the Dead and how it is celebrated by the local residents of three small towns outside of Mexico City...Gabriel, who is a wealth of knowledge and the most gracious and lovely guide made this experience so unique and special.

A truly memorable and comprehensive tour of the Day of the Dead ceremonies in Milpa Alta and Mixquic. Gabriel explained the cultural significance of the altars, the rituals at the graves and the rich historical evolution of the modern day practices. The tour guides encouraged the group to integrate with the local families which made this tour even more significant and authentic.

Gabriel's card was passed to me through a friend when I arrived in Mexico City -- even though I contacted him last minute, he got me in for his Day of the Dead tour of the villages surrounding Mexico City, ending with the huge celebration in Mixquic. Everything was well-planned and coordinated, and had I tried to go on this trip alone, I would have missed all the amazing local secrets Gabriel showed us: the delectable open-air mole markets and restaurant in San Pedro Actópan, and a totally untouristed cemetary where we saw Day of the Dead preparations more intimately than at larger celebrations; a second cemetary where fireworks and elaborate dirt mound sculptures were part of the festivities; and a final taste of the madness that is Mixquic. I would highly, highly recommend his services and this tour!
